Overview

78^th Street has a history of vehicle and pedestrian crashes. This project will provide pedestrian safety enhancements and placemaking elements to the 78^th Street corridor. This County funded project will install pavement markings, signs, and median street art aimed at pedestrian safety. More changes are being planned and will follow using a Federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Grant awarded to the County.

The project is within unincorporated Hillsborough County and will extend around 1.24 miles on 78^th Street from Causeway Boulevard to Palm River Road.

Pedestrian safety and speed management measures are included within the project plus placemaking elements. This will include new crosswalk striping and signs, along with pedestrian and bike safe standing areas in the median lane. 

Project Details

• Intersection safety enhancements at Palm River Road and 78^th Street, including new signs and importantly giving pedestrians a head start to go into the crosswalks before cars are given the green signals to go.
• Adding more white striped crosswalks in the corridor.
• Placemaking elements in front of Clair Mel Elementary School which include painted art within the median on either side of the existing crosswalk.

During this time, residents and motorists traveling on 78^th Street should be aware of the following:

• Traffic control for safety during the placemaking part of the project.
• Lane closures and potential detours.
