Purpose and Need:
STIP project U-6042 proposes to realign the offset intersection of 33rd Street SW and 34th Street NW and relocate the railroad crossing at 33rd Street SW and 1st Avenue SW in Long View, NC.
The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection while improving mobility, connectivity, and system linkage to provide efficient access to I-40 and the industrial areas—including Hickory Regional Airport—north and east of the project area.
Project History:
Based on the findings in the Greater Hickory Metropolitan Planning Organization (GHMPO) 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), the offset intersection at Main Street should be eliminated by realigning 33rd Street SW directly to 34th Street NW which will provide continuity for travel on these facilities as well as increasing the safety for traffic turning at the intersection. Based on the statement in the Plan, the expected purpose and need for the project will be to improve mobility, connectivity, and system linkage to provide efficient access to I-40 and the industrial areas, including the Hickory Regional Airport, north and east of the project area. The project was included per the processes outlined in the Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) legislation outlining how and which projects are selected for funding.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
