Project Study Area Map

Project Overview 

The N.C. Department of Transportation is beginning environmental studies on potential corridor options between Polkton and Lilesville in Anson County. This project is needed to help improve traffic congestion near Wadesboro, while improving traffic flow and freight transportation between Charlotte and Wilmington.

Economic prosperity will be promoted by supporting the efficiency of transport logistics and economic development throughout the state for economic regions and clusters of existing and emerging activity centers.

Several design alternatives will be evaluated, which may include a northern bypass option and a southern bypass option. Bypass options would likely consist of a four-lane median-divided facility with two lanes in each direction and paved shoulders. Detailed design alternatives will be determined as the project progresses.

Safety Concerns on U.S. 74


U.S. 74 has three locations currently on the 2023 NCDOT Highway Safety Improvement Program list as potentially hazardous intersections
 

841 crashes from 2018 to 2023 (15% involving freight traffic)
 

U.S. 74 is part of the National Truck Network, making it a popular route for freight traffic

 

Traffic Volumes

  • U.S. 74 west of U.S. 52 (No-build)

    • 2022: 20,000 - 28,000 vpd (vehicles per day)

    • 2045: 26,000- 36,700 vpd (vehicles per day)​​

Congested areas are often near resources such as Downtown Wadesboro and Anson High School

but are primarily related to the influx of seasonal travelers and freight traffic

Study Corridors

  • Study corridors, with widths typically 500 ft. to 1,500 ft., are used during the initial alternative evaluation process to compare potential options.

  • When the preferred alternative is selected, the roadway design process will avoid, minimize, or mitigate impacts within the corridor.

  • Property is purchased within the proposed right-of-way width, which is substantially less than the study corridor width.*

  • The right-of-way is the area that NCDOT will need to purchase to construct and maintain the project.

 

* Permanent and temporary easements may also be required.
