BR-0073: U.S. 76 (Andrew Jackson SW) over Gapway Swamp - Columbus
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on U.S. 76 (Andrew Jackson SW) over Gapway Swamp in Columbus County near the South Carolina border.
The purpose of this project is to provide a safe crossing of Gapway Swamp on U.S. 76 due to the bridge, while being maintained for safety, has become structurally deficient and is approaching the end of its functional life. A bridge is considered "structurally deficient" if it is in relatively poor condition or has insufficient load-carrying capacity. The insufficient load capacity could be due to the original design or to deterioration.

Detour Route
During construction the bridge will be replaced in its existing location and will require an off-site detour, illustrated below. Construction is anticipated to last 12 months.
