Project Overview:

The purpose of this project is to improve traffic operations and safety in the vicinity of the project interchange, in particular at the New Garden Road/Horse Pen Creek Road/Bryan Boulevard Ramps intersection. The overall crash rates for New Garden Road within the project study area are substantially higher than the North Carolina statewide average crash rates for similar facilities. The current interchange contains numerous vehicular conflict points as well as poor site distances for drivers. The addition of a new ramp from westbound New Garden Road to westbound Bryan Boulevard, as shown on the maps on display at today’s meeting, would reduce the number of conflict points at the intersection and create more of a standard “diamond interchange” configuration.

Proposed Improvements Include:

  • New ramp from westbound New Garden Road to westbound Bryan Boulevard

  • Lengthening of several existing turn lanes on New Garden Road and the Bryan Boulevard westbound exit ramp to provide increased vehicle storage

  • Adding raised medians on New Garden Road in several locations to provide vehicle channelization, separate opposing directions of traffic, and eliminate left turns onto New Garden Road from driveways adjacent to the intersection

  • Adding a third westbound lane on Bryan Boulevard between the New Garden Road and Fleming Road interchanges by extending the merging lane for the new westbound entrance ramp from New Garden Road to connect with the existing exit ramp to Fleming Road. This improvement would provide adequate room for weaving for merging/exiting traffic between these two interchanges

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
