Project Purpose

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is proceeding with the development of an engineering plan for future improvements to the existing State Route 315 (Olentangy River Road) and Hyatts Road (County Road 123) intersection. The project is necessary to improve safety and reduce congestion.

SR-315 and Hyatts Road Intersection Current Conditions:

  • 4-legged intersection

  • Single lane each direction

  • Dual stop signs on all approaches; right side LED signs

  • Ranked 26 on ODOT’s 2018 rural non-freeways list

Speed limits:

  • SR 315 – 45 mph

  • Hyatts Road – 50 mph

Daily traffic volumes (2019):

  • SR-315 – 8,578 (9% trucks)

  • Hyatts Road – 4,701 (5 % trucks)

Crash Trends 2016-2018

Crash Type

  • 10 angle

  • 2 rear end

  • 1 fixed object

Severity

  • Injury (46%)

  • Property Damage (54%)

Factor

  • Failure to Yield (46%)

Proposed Counter Measure

Roundabouts are a very efficient type of intersection. They do not have the same stop-and-go conditions as traditional intersections. Roundabouts keep people moving, but at speeds where injury risk is greatly reduced.
