N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to construct a roundabout at N.C. 11 and Old Lake Road intersection.

Project History

In late 2019 NCDOT conducted a crash analysis to evaluate safety conditions at the N.C. 11 and Old Lake Road intersection.  From October 2014 to September 2019, 18 crashes occurred, including one fatal crash and 13 injury crashes.  Most of the crashes resulted from vehicles on Old Lake Road failing to yield to vehicles traveling on N.C. 11. Based on the results, STIP Project W-5806A was funded as a safety project.  In June 2021 the intersection was changed to a four-way stop-sign controlled condition as an interim safety measure to reduce crashes.  The proposed roundabout is recommended as the ultimate solution to continue to reduce crashes, while also providing better traffic mobility.  The project is currently in the development, environmental, and engineering phase.  In June 2022, after reviewing preliminary designs, engineering studies, and public comments, NCDOT decided to delay the project delivery schedule two years to perform further traffic evaluation. Right-of-way acquisition is currently scheduled to begin in Spring 2024 and construction is currently scheduled to begin in Spring 2025.

Public Involvement

Information was provided to the public in a virtual format on this website. The public was encouraged to provide comments or share their thoughts regarding the proposed map below during the public comment period from February 28, 2022 through March 15, 2022. 

Comments were submitted via email to NC11-OldLakeRd-Columbus@PublicInput.com or by calling 512-580-8850 and entering project code 4349.

Comments and questions received during the comment period pertained to the following themes and concerns:

•     Ability of tractor trailers, logging trucks, and large farm equipment to travel through the roundabout.

•     Consideration of a traffic signal or other options for the intersection.

•     Education for drivers traveling through a roundabout.

•     Concern for impacts to properties and community residents.

•     Project cost and funding concerns.

•     Re-study of safety conditions after the four-way stop condition was added.
