Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on Rock Barn Road over I-40 in Conover, Catawba County. The bridge will be replaced with a new structure featuring two travel lanes, a 5- foot to 6-ish sidewalk on the south side of the bridge, and a 10-foot multi-use path on the north side.

The new bridge will be stage constructed.  The existing traffic pattern will be maintained on existing bridge while a portion of the new bridge is constructed to the east.  The traffic will shift onto the newly constructed bridge in a two-lane two-way pattern while the old bridge is removed, and the remaining portion of the new bridge will be constructed.  Once the entire bridge is completed, traffic will be placed in final patterns.

Project Highlights

This project began as a bridge replacement project. Alignments for the replacement of the bridge to the north were considered but discarded. The need to manage traffic on the I-40 ramps and service roads then led to expanding the project to include not just the bridge but the ramps and service roads as well. One option was explored to relocate the service roads farther away from I-40 and include traffic signals, but this option was discarded because it would have resulted in significant property acquisition in the area surrounding the bridge. The preferred option involves removing the connection of the service roads with the I-40 ramps and installing roundabouts to manage the flow of traffic.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
