Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to construct a new access road from US 64 into the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) site and make improvements to US 64 in the immediate vicinity. The project is located along US 64 approximately 4.5 miles west of Siler City near the Chatham-Randolph county line.

The CAM Access Road will connect the Wolfspeed Siler City Plant, which is currently under construction, to US 64 at an improved intersection. Wolfspeed is the first manufacturing development project in the CAM site and is anticipated to open phase one in 2024. Wolfspeed anticipates creating 1,800 new jobs on the 445-acre site over the next 8 years.1

The proposed transportation project is needed to safely and efficiently accommodate future projected traffic entering and exiting the Wolfspeed Siler City Plant and the CAM site.

The purpose of the project is to provide safe and efficient access to Wolfspeed and the CAM site and improve US 64 operations in the project vicinity to accommodate future projected traffic to/from the CAM site.

Project Highlights

The N.C. Department of Transportation  proposes to construct a new access road from U.S. 64 to the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) site.  The project is located along U.S. 64 approximately 4.5 miles west of Siler City, near the Chatham-Randolph county line.

The purposes of the project are to:

(1) provide safe and efficient access to the Wolfspeed Siler City Plant, which is currently under construction, and the rest of the CAM site; and

(2) accommodate future projected traffic entering and exiting the CAM site.

The access road is planned to be built initially as a two-lane median-divided roadway, with 12-foot lanes, 8-foot shoulders (4-foot paved plus 4-foot unpaved), and a 23-foot raised grass median with curb and gutter.  NCDOT will plan for right of way to accommodate a future widening of the CAM Access Road.

Project HE-0011 also proposes to make improvements to the new CAM Access Road intersection with U.S. 64.  Two intersection designs are currently being considered for this location, a standard intersection design and a reduced conflict intersection (RCI) design.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
