Cary has heard concerns regarding the traffic behaviors within the Kenilworth community.  Staff have responded by collecting data on the speed and volume of vehicles traveling through the neighborhood and are interested to hear input from the residents regarding potential traffic calming.  Any direct feedback can be provided by emailing the Cary Project Manager using the link below.

Community Acceptance

Cary staff want to better understand the community interest in traffic calming so we have developed a survey that illicits specific input on possible devices.  The survey recently closed; results are being reviewed and will be posted to this wepbage when available.

All citizens who believe they will be impacted by this project are encouraged to participate in the survey.  Any additional feedback can be provided directly to the Cary Project Manger, using the email link below.

All citizen input will be used by staff to help determine if the project moves forward and inform the next steps in this process.

Appropriation of Funds

Based on the data collection results, which included a highest 85th Percentile Speed less than 9-mph over the posted speed limit, Cary's Traffic Calming Program recommends a community funding of 25%.  The remaining cost of any proposed traffic calming will be funded by the Cary Traffic Calming Program.

Based on preliminary budget estimates, the community funding share may range between $3,500 and $7,000.

Community funding will be presented to Cary Town Council for acceptance and appropriation.

Maintenance

Cary responded to traffic safety concerns from some Kenilworth community members by evaluating Bebington and Maldon Drives for traffic calming.  This evaluation, presented and discussed in the Traffic Data Summary posted to the Documents section below, did not result in an initial recommendation by staff for traffic calming.

Based on further discussions with residents, staff would like to better understand the interests of the neighborhood as a whole and how others view the results of the Traffic Data Summary.  Cary's Traffic Calming Program offers the opportunity for communities to proceed with a project, absent a staff recommendation, if support within the neighborhood is strong.  A survey was developed to help staff determine if a traffic calming project would be appropriate in this community.

Any additional feedback can be provided by emailing the Cary Project Manager directly using the link below.  Project updates will be posted here as they become available.  Cary staff are happy to meet directly with community representatives as we move through this process.

We encourage you to review the Documents section to help contextualize the survey.  In addition to the 2018 traffic counts presented in the Traffic Data Summary, staff have reviewed more recent vehicle data to determine if travel patterns have changed.  The results, presented in the chart below, indicate that speeds in 2022 and 2023 are consistent with those measured previously.  (click the image to enlarge)
