Mecklenburg County completed a planning study for the future Irwin Creek Greenway corridor, which seeks to expand recreation access and enhance transportation options on the west side of I-77 between the existing Irwin Creek Greenway at Fifth St/Ray's Splash Planet and Waddell Street Park. The study evaluated the feasibility of a trail crossing under Interstate 77 along Irwin Creek, as well as connections to the Smallwood, McCrorey Heights, Washington Heights, and Lincoln Heights neighborhoods. While this section of trail is not currently funded for construction, it is intended to be added to the Mecklenburg County Greenway Master Plan in the future.
