School Route Ped/Bike Safety Improvements Project - East Bay High School, Corr Elementary, and Eisenhower Middle School Safety
Welcome to the virtual public engagement for the East Bay High School, Eisenhower Middle School, and Corr Elementary School Routes Safety Improvements Project (CIP # 69676327). This public engagement forum is open for your information and feedback from Aug. 4 to Aug. 22, 2025. Please share your feedback for the proposed student pedestrian and bicycling improvements on the survey page. The survey information you provide supports Safe Routes to School grant applications for funding future projects. Your feedback is recorded and reviewed to improve the project.
Project Overview
The Hillsborough County School Route Safety Improvement Program strives to encourage more walking and bicycling to school by making it safer and more comfortable for students. Each year, engineers study the routes students take to several schools to identify improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, bicycle facilities, and improved traffic signal operations that prioritize crossing students. These proposed improvements are shared with Project Advisory Committees made up of school principals, PTA members, and other stakeholders to gather their feedback and support. The County is conducting this virtual engagement to share proposed pedestrian and bicycling improvements with parents and the community to obtain feedback and learn more about their priorities.
Project Study Area
The map below shows the 2-mile radius from the schools where busing is not provided. There are bus stops south of Big Bend Road that support busing students across the newly widened Big Bend Road. Also shown on the map are East Bay High, Eisenhower Middle, and Corr Elementary schools, student walking routes, existing sidewalk, marked crossings, and crossing guard.
Student Pedestrian Safety Toolbox
The toolbox below contains improvements that provide safety and comfort to students walking and bicycling to school. Tier 1 improvements in the yellow squares can be implemented the following year and include high visibility pedestrian signage, new crosswalks, crossing guards, and modified school speed zones. A Tier 2 improvement currently unfunded includes a shared-use path on the north side of Old Big Bend Road east of Interstate 75. The Florida Department of Transportation is studying the feasibility of a pedestrian bridge across Big Bend Road west of Covington Garden Drive as part of the Southcoast Greenway Trail improvement.
