Project Overview

Bridges will be replaced and other modifications will be made as shown below.

Pittman Road (Exit 101)

  • Replacement of bridge over I-95

  • Realignment of ramps to meet current standards

  • Realignment of Bertie Heights Road, Seafood House Road and Batten Road (S.R. 2329), removing their connections with the I-95 exit ramps

  • Creation of a cul-de-sac on St. Stephens Road and Little Creek Farm Road/Windermere Road removing their connections with the I-95 ramps

East Main Street (Exit 102) 

  • Replacement of bridge over I-95

  • Realignment of ramps to meet current standards

  • Realignment of St. Stephens Road removing its connection with the I-95 ramp

Bagley Road (Exit 105) 

  • Replacement of bridge over I-95

  • Realignment of ramps to meet current standards

The three interchange bridges are functionally obsolete.  A functionally obsolete bridge can no longer meet the demands of the traffic using it. These bridges are safe but need to be improved or replaced due to narrow lanes, low height clearances or have posted weight limits.

    Alternative 2 proposes 5-way roundabouts connecting Pittman Road, the I-95 ramps, and service roads.

    Roundabouts

    ​The N.C. Department of Transportation builds roundabouts to improve safety for drivers,​ pedestrians and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical of traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.  A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal. In addition, the modern roundabout is much smaller than older traffic circles and requires vehicles to travel at lower speeds (15-20 mph), making them safer than traffic circles. Additionally, the slower speeds make it easier for a driver to find a gap of traffic inside the roundabout before safely entering it.​

    All comments will be taken into consideration, and carry equal weight, regardless of submittal method.
