Project Overview

This project will construct intersection modifications or improvements at the following Gaston County intersections:

  • Realign the N.C. 275 (Dallas Bessemer City Highway)/N.C. 274 (Dallas Bessemer City Highway) intersection approximately 200 feet east of its existing location

  • White Jenkins Road (S.R. 1456) will become a dead end street north of N.C. 274 and a turn around will be provided north of the dead end location

  • Oates Road (S.R. 1312) will be realigned on new location to connect to N.C. 274 across from Wall Ridge Drive approximately 860 feet to the west of it's current location

  • Existing Oates Road will be realigned at the south end to connect to the new Oates Road and the north end will be realigned to connect to Fraley road

    • Oates Road will no longer connect in its existing location to N.C. 274

  • Improvements will be made to the intersections of Fairview Drive (S.R. 1327)at White Jenkins Road (S.R. 1456) and N.C. 275 (Dallas Bessemer City Highway).

This project addresses safety concerns at a skewed intersection. At present, White Jenkins Road and N.C. 275 meet in a curve and form a skewed intersection with N.C. 274 and Oates Road. This configuration is awkward and makes safely navigating the intersection difficult for motorists.

As part of this project, White Jenkins Road will become a dead end and Oates Road will no longer meet N.C. 274 at this location. A new intersection will be constructed approximately 200 feet to the east where N.C. 275 will meet N.C. 274 at an angle allowing better sight distance for motorists. Oates Road will be realigned to meet N.C. 274 approximately 860 feet to the west at a new four-way intersection with Mall Ridge Drive.

Project Highlights

This project will:

  • Close the existing intersection of White Jenkins Road, N.C. 275, N.C. 274, and Oates Road.

  • Create a cul-de-sac and dead-end White Jenkins Road, maintaining access to homes, businesses, and churches nearby.

  • Create a new signalized intersection approximately 200 feet to the east where N.C. 275 will be realigned to meet N.C. 274 in a safer manner.

  • Realign Oates Road to create a new signalized intersection approximately 860 feet to the west at the existing intersection of N.C. 274 and Mall Ridge Drive. All access to homes and churches on Oates Road will be maintained.

  • Convert the intersection of Fairview Drive and N.C. 275 to an all-way stop intersection.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
