The Boulevards of Concord Study Area

Project Overview

The City of Concord is conducting a study of the Concord Mills Boulevard – Bruton Smith Boulevard Corridor to establish a community vision and path to achieve that vision. These Boulevards are some of the largest and busiest roads in the city and home to some of the most visited entertainment attractions Concord has to offer. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and vision!

Our Follow-Up Virtual Open House is the online component of our in-person Open House which was held on March 26, 2024. To view the Poster Boards shown at the in-person event click on the pdf at the very end of the page.

Improve the look and feel of the corridor and create a unique sense of place.
Create inviting and safe spaces to gather.
Provide safe and efficient walk and bike routes while preserving vehicular mobility.

We want to understand your priorities for the Concord Mills Boulevard-Bruton Smith Boulevard corridor. For each of the scales below, review the implementation strategy and use the slider to tell us what you think.

Red Route Realignment / New Local Service:
Reconfiguration of the Red Route into two separate services. One would run along the Boulevards, the other would connect to RCCC South. This would increase the frequency of service along the Boulevards.

Quay - Old Holland Connector:
Possible bridge over I-85 that would create an east-west road south of and parallel to the Boulevards. This corridor would accommodate bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit but would not provide access to I-85. This would create a new route, relieving traffic congestion on the Boulevards.

Streetscape Improvements, Street Trees, and Interchange Landscaping:
Projects that add walkways, decorative elements, seating, and other amenities to roadways (including the Boulevards and other streets in the study area). These modifications improve the look of an area, provide shade, and make walking safer and more comfortable.

Placemaking and Places to Gather:
Includes using attributes like shared logos, signage, and lighting to signal to visitors that they're in a new place. Can also be used to create pedestrian areas in retail plazas, pocket parks, or other spaces.

Sidewalk Gaps, Crosswalks, and Greenways:
Sidewalks, crosswalks, and greenways create opportunities to walk along and across roadways in the study area. Adding these would allow for more walking and bicycling, lessening traffic and providing health benefits.

A new zoning overlay district that would require new development be built in a way more conducive to walking, with buildings closer to each other and required sidewalks and other facilities.
