Cary has heard concerns regarding the traffic conditions adjacent to the Wynwood South community, along Stephens Road.  This corridor serves as the primary access to several communities so staff have developed a concept that we believe will enhance the mobility of pedestrians and cyclists, while still supporting the vehicle traffic and emergency access commensurate with a Collector Avenue.

Cary has responded to traffic safety concerns from the Wynwood South community members by evaluating Stephens Road for traffic calming.  This evaluation, presented and discussed in the Traffic Data Summary posted to the Documents section below, resulted in an initial recommendation by staff for traffic calming.

Staff have developed this into a Concept Design to exhibit Cary's suggestions for traffic calming (speed humpsalong this corridor and to facilitate discussions with affected citizens.  To-date, this design has been reviewed by Cary's Traffic Calming Safety Committee to ensure that impacts to access and emergency services are minimized and acceptable.  The improvements proposed for Stephens Road are intended to moderate vehicle speeds adjacent to the Wynwood South and Prestwyck subdivisions.  We encourage you to review the Documents section for additional information.

Staff conducted a web survey to illicit input from the community and determine if the impacted citizens were in support of the project.  Those households directly impacted by this project were included in the project Influence Area, but all impacted citizens are encouraged to engage in the process.  The survey closed in the Fall of 2023 and the results are viewable by selecting Continue below.  In addition, staff have included the Survey Results and a Survey Summary & Comment Response in the Documents section below.

The results from the survey, combined with the context of Stephens Road in the larger transportation network, did not depict adequate support from the community for a traffic calming project at this time.   As such, staff are recommending to continue monitoring this area and explore opportunities for traffic calming and mobility as additional areas nearby continue to develop.  Any additional feedback can be provided by emailing the Cary Project Manager directly using the link below.  Project updates will be posted here as they become available.
