A project submitted for SMART SCALE funding by the City of Fredericksburg seeks to redesign the intersection of Route 1 and Fall Hill Avenue to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

On Route 1, this project will add a southbound right turn lane and extend the northbound right turn lane. The project also aims to reduce conflict points on Route 1 by extending the raised median along Route 1 and converting a short portion of Amaret Street to a one-way condition.

On Fall Hill Avenue, the project would provide three lanes on both the eastern and western approaches.

NOTE: During the public comment period, VDOT received numerous comments requesting additional pedestrian crossing accommodations at the intersection. New crosswalks and pedestrian signal crossing equipment are planned to be included at each leg of the intersection as part of the project. This was not shown clearly on the meeting display, and we apologize for the confusion. 

Benefits

The project redesigns the intersection by expanding capacity to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on Route 1. The project also will provide new sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals at the intersection. 

Public Outreach

A design public hearing was held for this project:

• Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021 5-7 p.m. at the Dorothy Hart Community Center located at 408 Canal Street Fredericksburg, VA 22405

The public comment period closed on Oct. 1, 2021.
