Virginia Statewide Trails Plan
The State Trails Office invites you and your community to participate in the Statewide Trails planning process by taking the survey.
Virginia’s Statewide Multi-use Trails Plan will lay the groundwork for a network of multi-use trails in the Commonwealth by:
- Inventorying existing and proposed multi-use trails across the Commonwealth
- Identifying key gaps in Virginia’s network of multi-use trails
- Outlining next steps and best practices in multi-use trail development
- Providing opportunities for community visioning and engagement
Multi-use Trails should
- preferably have a hard surface such as asphalt, concrete, or crushed stone that can accommodate people using a variety of devices, including foot traffic, bikes, strollers, skateboards, rollerblades, electric bikes (e-bikes), wheelchairs, mobility devices, and horses where appropriate;
- strive for a grade of less than 5%,
- preferably be wide enough to enable a wide variety of users to operate safely in both directions,
- preferably be separated from motor vehicle traffic,
- strive for regional connectivity by linking people to places and other trail facilities (e.g., state parks, hospitals, major population, and employment centers, etc.).
Multi-use Trails are typically NOT:
- Hiking and mountain bike trails that primarily serve a single mode or user type
- Soft-surface trails and footpaths that are not accessible to people using wheelchairs and mobility devices
- Water trails or blueways used by paddlers
- Trails that serve motorized uses, such as snowmobiles or all-terrain vehicles
- Short closed-loop trails within a park or campus that do not connect to other trails
