Route 301 Intersection Safety Improvement Projects
Route 301 Intersection Safety Improvement Projects
Project Overview
The proposed projects to modify three intersections along Route 301 in King George County to improve safety and mobility at the following locations:
- Route 301 and Route 3
- Route 301 at Market Center
- Route 301 at University Drive/Commerce Drive
These projects seek to reduce the risk of crashes and congestion at the intersections by reconfiguring approaches, modifying access, and adding pedestrian accommodations along Route 301 near Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren.
The first project proposes to reconfigure the Route 3 and Route 301 intersection to a median U-turn intersection, which will remove left turns from the signalized intersection. Left-turn movements will be accommodated with the construction of a U-turn area north and south of the intersection on Route 301. Drivers will use a combination of U-turns at the new locations and right turns at the signalized intersection to travel in their desired direction on both Route 301 and Route 3.
The second project proposes to modify the existing Route 301 and University Drive/Commerce Drive intersection, along with Route 301 and Market Center, to a signalized double restricted crossing U-Turn (RCUT). The design only allows for right turns onto Route 301 from the side streets. A new U-turn area will be constructed south of the University Drive/Commerce Drive intersection. Left turns and through movements from the side streets will be accomplished using U-turns at existing and proposed locations on Route 301. Minor sidewalk improvements, pedestrian crossings, and signal equipment will also be installed at both intersections.
These innovative intersections are known to lower crash rates, enhance safety, and improve traffic flow, even as traffic volumes increase over time.
