Greenville Avenue (Route 11) Corridor Improvements, City of Staunton

Greenville Avenue (Route 11) Corridor Improvements, City of Staunton

The Greenville Avenue (Route 11) “road diet” projects in the city of Staunton improve traffic operations and enhance access for bicyclists and pedestrians. A road diet is a specific type of roadway reconfiguration that typically removes one or more travel lanes and utilizes the space for other uses or travel modes.

The project limits extend 0.92-mile between Statler Boulevard and Commerce Road. This section of Greenville Avenue is currently five lanes wide, with two through lanes in each direction (north-south) and a two-way left-turn lane in the center of the roadway.

Throughout the project limits, a single travel lane in each direction will serve motor vehicle traffic. A median will replace portions of the center turn lane to limit the number of full access points and reduce crashes. The median will consist of grass in some locations and concrete in others.

From Statler Boulevard to just south of Richmond Avenue (Route 250), the right lane in each direction will be converted to a five-foot-wide bicycle lane with a four-foot buffer separating it from vehicle traffic.

Between the intersections with Richmond Avenue and Commerce Road, the bike lane will transition to a shared-use path. This will connect to the shared-used path scheduled to start construction on Commerce Road in 2027.

Sidewalk construction will close gaps in existing sidewalks between Statler Boulevard and Commerce Road. Other pedestrian improvements include crosswalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps.

In 2023 Greenville Avenue had an average traffic count of 11,000 vehicles per day. By the design year of 2048 the estimated traffic count is 14,000 vehicles per day.

Benefits

The Greenville Avenue road diet projects and pedestrian/bicycle improvements will enhance safety for all roadway users, further expand Staunton’s multimodal network and enhance access to and from the city’s downtown district.
