Current Events and Updates:
Roadmap to Restarting Advisory Boards
The process to reinstate the City’s remaining boards and commissions is tied closely to the launch of four new Council Committees, each of which will provide policy leadership in key areas. This effort includes coordination with department directors, staff liaisons, advisory board chairs, and community stakeholders.
Key milestones include:
April/May 2025: Development of department and organizational work plans that align with Council recovery priorities and goals.
May 2025: The launch of the new Council Committees (HCD, PEDE, PS).
June 10, 2025: A facilitated Policy, Finance, & Infrastructure Council Committee work session to discuss organizational work plan projects for each Council Priority.
June 2025: A facilitated workshop with Boards & Commissions Chairs/Co-Chairs. Following the workshop, staff will begin working with advisory boards to develop work plans that are aligned with Council recovery priorities and goals.
July 2025–2026 – Phased relaunch of Boards and Commissions under the new framework.
Next Steps
Department Directors and staff liaisons will begin developing work plans with advisory boards this spring, using Council Committee priorities as a foundation. Boards and Commissions will relaunch in phases beginning in July 2025, with some resuming earlier based on readiness and recovery priorities.
Annual Reports
Board and Commission chairs submit annual reports to City Council each year in January. These reports allow boards to report on the work they have done in the past year, outline their goals for the upcoming year, and ensure that their work aligns with City Council’s strategic priorities.
Take a moment to review the compiled list of all board and commissions' 2024 annual reports. We encourage all board members, especially board chairs, to review other boards' annual reports to identify overlapping goals or tasks and explore collaboration opportunities through joint meetings with those boards. Please remember that joint meetings are considered special meetings and must be noticed according to public meetings law.
Nominate neighborhood volunteers for the new monthly Volunteer Spotlight program!
The Neighborhood Advisory Committee is excited to announce the initiation of a monthly Volunteer Spotlight program, aiming to honor the exceptional individuals who make significant contributions to their local community. Nominations for outstanding neighborhood volunteers will be accepted on a rolling basis. Each month, one volunteer will be selected for recognition in the Neighborhood Newsletter and various media outlets. If an individual is not recognized in the month of their initial nomination, their nomination will be carried forward for consideration in subsequent months.
Report an Issue Form
The "Report an Issue Form" is now available on every Board, Commission, and Council Committee landing page. Developed in collaboration with Code with Asheville, this form serves as a dedicated platform for community members to report any challenges encountered while accessing or participating in City public meetings.
On each Committee page, you will find the following prompt:
Have an issue with participating in a board or commission meeting, in person or virtually? Use this form to let us know!
If a community member experiences an issue accessing or participating in a public board meeting, they can complete the Report an Issue Form on the City's webpage(s). Communication and Public Engagement (CAPE) will promptly receive a notification and investigate the reported issue. Updates and responses to the concern will be shared on the dynamic spreadsheet that is accessible through the form. Please note that the form exclusively pertains to public board meetings managed by the City of Asheville and does not encompass subcommittees, engagement events, and/or ad hoc meetings at this time. Your feedback is invaluable in enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of our public meetings.
Boards and Commissions Realignment Working Group
The Realignment Working Group (RWG) met virtually on the 3rd Monday of each month from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. They presented their final report and recommendations to City Council on April 8, 2025. City staff reviewed their recommendations and provided responses. More information about this community-led working group can be found on the Realignment Working Group Project webpage.
